Childhood is being Lied to until you either learn better or become the Lie
I turned forty this year. And I realized that I have spent somewhere in the neighbourhood of two decades attempting to decipher the hollow spot in my soul where other people seem to have job satisfaction and a belief in civilization and capitalism. But as I plugged away at this, I have watched more people express the same dissatisfaction. People no longer seem scandalized to admit that they hate the capitalist consumer hellscape where we all must currently make our lives. Whether they lean left or right, more people are looking at the central myths of civilization and finding no solace in those myths.
When a culture’s central myths fail, the culture fails as well.
So where does this leave us? I don’t know, but I am both optimistic and terrified. How about you?
Most of us begin soul searching as we hit puberty. The less privilege one is born into, the sooner this process occurs.
