Ukraine and the End of Innocence

So Russia has invade Ukraine. And obviously I have thoughts.

The first is that Russia is a vampire nation: undead, always rotting and never dying. Always crumbling and never collapsing. I wonder how it manages that. Obviously nukes change the equation, but even after world war one this was true.

Second thought. This is why Iran wants nuclear weapons. Ukraine gave up it’s nukes 1994. I suspect they are referring that fact now. Russia is invading, relying on the assumption that no other nation wishes to provoke a nuclear power. I imagine the Ukraine wishes it had that advantage as well.

Third thought. Russia, and more properly Putin, seems intent on reconquering former Soviet states, building a new Russian empire. For what purpose is the question. Aggrandizement obviously. But beyond that? Are they trying to stave off further decline? Is Putin trying to distract citizens from domestic problems with a war? The US pulls that trick all the time. Does This Is feel it needs a buffer between it and hostile nations? What is driving This? And who is next?

Russia took Crimea. Russia has De facto annexed much of Georgia. Belarus is friendly. So who’s next? Estonia or Latvia or Lithuania? Finland? Mongolia?

Fourth thought. What does China think of all of This? The US and Russia are empires in decline. India and especially China are in the rise. What does China think of all This? It shares a border with Russia. Is it amused? As Russia draws the attention of the West away from China’s similar actions in the South China Sea. It is indifferent? Is it concerned? Perhaps Mongolia is next? As I suspect China views Mongolia as basically belonging to them.
