Zugswang is a German chess term that literally translates as: compulsion to move. Zugswang refers to situations where the active player has no good move, and because it is their turn they are forced to make a move that weakens their position. I feel like fascists and other member of the far right have a startlingly good grasp of zugswang, and are verya dept at forcing the rest of us into that position.
Progressives and activists are in the difficult position of trying to enact positive change and also preserve the positive change they’ve already achieved. The right are simply out to demolish everything anyone else has built. There is a certain freedom in choosing to be the kaiju, and the right revels in that freedom.
