Civilization and the Rule of Kings

The aphorism, do as I say and not as I do is the underlying framework for all hierarchical authority. The CEO gets more benefits and higher pay, besides to being held to different standards on attendance and dress code. Hierarchical governments create class systems and caste systems. They seek to justify these imbalances of right and power. But they all boil down to the same thing.

They all boil down to the idea that the person with the gun makes the rules. There is not enough in the world for everyone to live as a king. And for even a fraction of the human population to live as a king, the vast majority must live as serfs. Hence the need for the gun to be in their hands. This is the foundation of civilization: that the many labour for the benefit of a few. And the few are willing to throw bread crumbs to the many if it keeps the many working. But when the many ask for anything that would give them some measure of self-determination, then the gun comes out.

Kings of old built exploitation in to the foundation of civilization. Civilization is unequal by design. To fight against inequality is to fight against civilization itself. It’s a fight worth having.
