If we look up from our day to day, what do we see? If we stop obsessing with the latest thing on the TV, or whatever opiate of the masses we are personally imbibing, what will we be forced to confront? I sat down once, and created a digital collage of all the species rendered extinct by human actions. And I wept. And then, not being content with that blow to my optimism, I did the same thing for species we had rendered critically endangered. I didn’t finish that one, because there were so many that I simply couldn’t manage it. And this happens.
Look at any part of the big picture. I don’t much care which part. Civil rights, inequality, endangered species, pollution, rising fascism… the pandemic. How does anyone look at the big picture? We don’t. We watch the latest big thing and complain about spoilers. What else are we to do?
