Sleeping Beast: May 2022

It is the fifteenth of the Month! And you know what that means! It’s time for another episode in the Adventures of Professor Freeman Harbinger. And if you haven’t read the earlier adventures, all of them are available at my Internet Archive account here. I have also started including the stories on the website here.

This Month

Freeman Harbinger ventures into the Frontier of the Mirrored Lands and encounters the Mighty Monoceros and must once more face off against the Bakumera. We discuss a holiday again. This time, we talk about Dragon’s Day. We talk about the depths of the Shadowlands, and difference between the shallows and the depths. Finally, we talk about the Mighty Monoceros in more depth.

Other Media

I’ve been poking around the internet lately. And I thought that I would grace all you loyal freethinking cultists with some of my discoveries. First, if you aren’t watching Overly Sarcastic Productions, may I recommend that you correct that. I recently watched “Trope Talk: Magical Otherworlds,” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MedjuejIJ14) and would recommend this episode for anyone reading Freeman Harbinger’s adventures. Likewise, I want to take a moment to recommend Philosophy Tube and say that if you haven’t started watching Abigail’s channel, that you start doing so. The recent episode on “Transhumanism,” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqPd6MShV1o&t=2469s) is well worth a watch especially. I also recently stumbled upon F.D. Signifier through his videos: “The Tragic Fall of Kanye West” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvgehVhF9D4), and recommend him- although his material is all heavy and not for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Like everyone else in the English speaking world, I just finished watching Moon Knight. Unlike everyone else, I was already a big Moon Knight fan, having stumbled onto him in the 90s when he teamed up with Spider-Man to fight the Secret Empire. For those looking to get into Moon Knight in the comics, I have two recommendations. First, I recommend the Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey run of Moon Knight. But may I take a moment to also recommend that you get it second hand or through the library, as I don’t feel comfortable recommending you give Ellis money after the allegations that have come to light regarding him. Second, I recommend that you look into the original Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz run for the character.

I recently helped to kickstart VaatiVidya’s new book Soul Arts. Anyone curious can have a look here. I’m expecting the book shortly, and am very much looking forward to it. Take a moment to watch the video, and then go looking at the pages for the artists who contributed.

Music Things

I have rather eclectic music tastes, and I try to keep things a little more reasonable here. But this month I am recommending Diablo Swing Orchestra, and they are more challenging than some of my other recommendations. Specifically, I am going to recommend three songs from different albums to give an interesting cross section of their work. First, I am recommending: Voodoo Mon Amour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2mZVOd0jWY), the song that introduced me to Diablo Swing Orchestra. Second I am recommending Balrog Boogie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D_2RjdwUQQ). Third, I am recommending Superhero Jagganath (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1unoCm0anc).

I am also recommending Machinae Supremacy. Specifically, I’m suggesting you give a listen to: Pendulum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxyZniaingE), Into the Nightworld (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP8H3s58ZL0), and Empire of Steel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuOP_HGTN4Y). Last, I am recommending Cryo Chamber, whose ambient music I use when writing. I tend to listen to: Songs for Dark Gods (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-pZbPNpLhI&t=702s), Temple of Cthulhu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=017yCQMfbzE&t=266s), and Chernobyl Dark Music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=017yCQMfbzE&t=266s).

Final Thoughts

So that wraps things up for this month. I had other stuff I wanted to recommend, and I’ll drop them into the grab bag below. But let me know how you liked this month’s issue. The newsletter list is still cozy enough that I can respond to individual emails. That may not be the case soon. Thanks again. Have Fun and Make Good Art.
