Not Supposed to Like it

At the end of the eleventh grade my mother insisted that I get a summer job. Specifically, she dropped me off at the local mall with a sheaf of resumes, and informed me that she wouldn’t drive me home until I had handed out all of them. As it happened, the local grocery store needed extra people for the night shift. I didn’t like the job. But my father informed me that: “You’re not supposed to like your job.”

Think about that. This thing you will spent the majority of your time doing or preparing to do, you aren’t supposed to like that thing. This thing that you will do from the end of schooling until you are too old to continue working, you aren’t supposed to like that thing. That thing that you are expected to devote the majority of your attention and energy towards, you aren’t supposed to like that thing.

That makes sense.

That’s a good system.
