I am watching an ad for compostable plastic bags, which is implying that by purchasing these things, we would be enlightened. The ad comes complete with a gong and buddhist temple music as a modern couple does yoga in the park. This is followed by an ad for a grocery store that co-opts family picnics and the feeling of togetherness, suggesting that if you just buy some more things then family harmony can be yours.
Nobody likes ads. Especially for things that are functionally commodities. I don’t have a preferred brand of sandwich bag. I don’t have a favored grocery store. These things just intrude upon my life and erode my mental energy. And I hate them. But they are an unavoidable feature of the modern world. The price of existence.
