Creative Intake

I am going to talk a little here about the importance of creative intake. I see creatives worrying about their creative output. The participate in art challenges, they take part in National Novel Writing Month. And that is critical. We can’t simply think about what we want to create. We must actually start creating.

But just as important, creatives must intake new ideas. We need inspiration. We need to cast a wide net. We need to watch things outside our comfort zone. We need to read things outside our chosen genre. We need to research and learn and expand our minds. We need to take in fiction, and art, non fiction, and music. We need to deliberate cross mismatched things and see how they look. Intake is as important as output. Because what you can output is determined by the depth and breadth of you intake.
