It’s Pride month. And with trans folk under very blatant attack in both the USA and the UK, I felt it right to talk about the unspoken bigotry that transphobes try to smuggle in to ever conversation about trans rights. This smuggling is not new. Homophobes used and still use this same tactic against gay men.
The bigotry they try to smuggle in is that LGBTQ+ folk are inherently predatory. The presence of a trans woman in a woman’s changing room or a woman’s bathroom is described in exactly the same terms as if an actively violent rapist were in that same space. Trans woman are assumed by the bigot to be inherently predatory.
And if that sound familiar to you, that because the tactic was used against gay men before it was used against trans women.
The bigot views the queer person as inherent evil, inherent immoral, inherently deviant. Don’t launder their bigotry for them and make it seem reasonably by letting it pass. When you hear these arguments, you should call out the assumption. Don’t let them smuggle their bigotry into the conversation. Make the conversation about their bigotry.
