Meditation and Letting Things Pass By

I don’t come naturally to meditation. My mind is like a wiki on hyperdrive. And bringing my thoughts to heel is not a natural process. As such, I feel that meditation is one of the most important practices I can cultivate. My mind in its natural state is useful. But if allowed to run free, it can exacerbate my anxiety disorder and leave me unable to get much done.

One of the most important things I have learned while meditating, is how important it is to be okay with doing it wrong. When meditating, I have a temptation to get angry when stray thoughts arise. Which of course generates more unproductive thoughts. The most useful practice in my meditation has been to accept the stray thoughts and let them go. I don’t even have to acknowledge them. When I can let the thoughts be, let them pass without comment, then the meditation becomes infinitely more productive.

Things will happen. Not everything that happens requires a comment.
