Synopsis: The Storyteller is the title given the psychonaut who will be guiding and activating the Incursion. This is true, but this also a gentle lie told to hide a greater truth that risks devouring the mind of any Psychonaut who dares to play the role of Storyteller. The Storyteller is a title given to an Archetype, possibly the most important archetype in the Blood Red Dreaming: a mighty matryoshka doll of roles hidden within each other. The Storyteller sheds his and her skin to be different things at different points in the story. The Storyteller is dangerous to those psychonauts who dare wear that archetype, because the Storyteller infect the wearer with an insatiable desire to create and to question the creations of others. To wear the skin of the Storyteller is to make everything craft. The Storyteller learns to view everything with the craftsman’s eye. To ask, how was that done? To ask, could I have done better? To ask, why did they do that? To ask, what were they trying to accomplish? To ask, what reaction were they hoping to elicit from me? To ask, most importantly, how are they trying to use me?
The Dreamwalker is a unique aspect of the Storyteller. Rather than a single individual, the Dreamwalker is actually two Storytellers- either best friends or lovers or siblings depending upon the telling- the Dreamwalker typically (though not always) manifests as a single individual in the Shadowlands. If things go badly wrong, the storyteller is encouraged to depict the Dreamwalker’s form as splitting into the two components. The Dreamwalker’s two component individuals may be both male, both female, male and female, or gender fluid.
But keep in mind, that the Dreamwalker is the role played by the Psychonauts at this point in their (and thus your) journey. The Dreamwalker and the rookie Psychonauts are both Storytellers trying to tell a story that they do not yet know or understand. They are both warriors dropped into a battle which they do not understand, dropped into the deep end with some dark force demanding that you swim.
And so take this is stride. What is mysterious now will make sense later one. The Dreamwalker is always an ally to the Free Peoples and to Psychonauts and this is enough for you to understand for the moment.
Excerpt:
“Fitz! Are you all right? Mr. Dreamer! Oh my gosh! Fitz we’ve found them! We’re safe!”
Harley’s vision cleared and he saw a young girl who looked like she was twelve years old or younger, and boy in his early teens- whom Harley suspected he had just ricocheted off at both groups rounded the corner. A sudden shocked awareness spread over Harley and he looked to Marion in shock. Marion nodded, the look on face was the look of man who had just discovered that somebody had ordered strippers for his twelve year old daughter’s birthday party.
“These are the kids, aren’t they?” Harley said.
“These are Maia and Fitzroy. Marion said, still nodding like a bobble-head toy, “These are definitely them. There is clearly somebody writing this story we’re in. And clearly, he’s a hack.”
Maia and Fitzroy stared at Marion and then at Harley. Fitzroy looked bewildered and Maia wore an unmistakable expression of sheer joy. “I told you Fitz! I told you the Dreamwalker would help us! That’s what the stories said, and here they are. And now we don’t have to walk the Witch Road alone.”
“And they look just as lost and desperate as we do. I don’t know that this helps.”
Marion looked at Harley, “I don’t think the agents were here for us.”
Harley looked behind them at the agents approaching rapidly and then over the children’s shoulders at the agents approaching rapidly from that direction. Harley grabbed Maia by the hand.
“That’s right, here we are. Run for your life.” Harley said pleasantly.
