Watchtowers and Way Point Shrines

A unique feature of Blood Red Dreaming compared to other tabletop role-playing games is that each play session is an incursion into the Shadowlands. The Incursion begins at the start of the session, and the avatars exit the Incursion at the end of the session. Players do not save their progress between sessions at return as though nothing had happened between sessions. And so, if the players wish to begin or continue play at a particular location at the beginning of a session, they must do so by attuning to Watchtowers and Way Point Shrines.

When the Psychonauts reach and attune to a watchtower, they unlock all affiliated Way Point Shrines. Players can begin any incursions at any unlocked Way Point Shrine. They can also successfully exit an incursion through a Way Point Shrine. Without ending an incursions by reaching a Way Point Shrine, the psychonaut will lose any items, artifacts, or reliquaries they had attuned during the incursion. Although they will not lose any incantations learned. All watchtowers have a Way Point Shrine at their base. Most Watchtowers unlock between five and seven Way Point Shrines.

Lacking a Waypoint Shrine, Psychonauts can safely exit an incursion with all of their gear if they have a Shrine Key Talisman. Shrine Key Talismans can be obtained by sacrificing items of value at a Way Point Shrine. Items which be sacrificed include Deed Flags, Reliquary and Artifact attunements, Spirit Marks, Elder Stardust, God Coins, Demon Blood, and Monster Bones.

Rather than reaching a Watchtower in the Depths to attune to it, Psychonauts may also reach a Watchtower in the Shallows by undertaking an Excursion to a Watchtower Echo. By reaching the site of a Watchtower Echo and invoking the Watchtower, a Psychonaut may begin an Incursion at the Affiliated Watchtower Way Point Shrine in the Depths. And may thus attune the Watchtower at the beginning of the Incursion as well.
