Thoughts and Musings
I do not believe in the myths of modern life. I do not find the myths of modern life to be satisfying. They don’t drive me to get out of bed. They don’t motivate me to give one hundred and ten percent in the old day job. I am not happy with two days to recharge my body and soul between periods of semi-voluntary servitude.
I don’t buy into consumer society. I don’t buy into capitalism. I don’t believe that the promise of democracy has been kept. I don’t believe in the myth of the industrial revolution and technological progress. I do not see us as occupying the top position on some staircase of human achievement.
Civilizations fall when people stop believing in the central promise of the culture and the myths of that culture. I don’t mean they stop believing in the Gods of Olympus or similar things. I mean that they stop believing in the ideas and beliefs that underpin the culture.
I have lost faith in sacred tenets of civilization. I am a heretic against progress and capitalism.
And, I do not think that I am alone.
I do not think I am the only person whose stomach twists into knots on monday. I do not think that I am alone in thinking that all of this frantic work has produced little of value. I don’t think I am alone when I think that I am trapped in a cult I did not agree to join.
I think you feel the same way. I think you agree that something is very wrong. And perhaps that something has been wrong for a very long time.
